Buy the ones you want, or that are closest to what you want. Study them, re-design them if needed. Actually, using or at least studying a real pattern will answer tons of your questions. I learned as a young boy how to sew from watching my mom. She made most of her clothes, as well as quite a few of mine. Those old patterns are where it's at for learning what you need to know; they will coincide with the ebook so you can understand what it is telling you.
