copper rivets question

Recommended Posts

Which is the correct side (if there is one) to have the anvil on a copper rivet on say a cartridge belt? Does the anvil go on the inside or the outside of the item? I've looked at many pics of older belts and other items that have copper rivets and noticed them both ways. So is there a right way and a wrong way or one way that was historically used most? Thanks for any replies.

I prefer having the head of the rivet on the outside (the visible side) of the project, and I always dome the head so it looks nice.

But, as with most other things, there are exceptions to the rule...

If I am making a piece of horse gear I tend to put the rivet head on the inside of the piece. I do that so the peened end of the rivet is AWAY from the horse's skin. I don't want that little piece of hard copper sticking up above the surounding leather and rubbing a raw spot on my horse.

You answered you're own question - it was historically done both ways - no single right way........

FWIW - my answer is based on inspecting several thousand original pieces as well as several thousand more images........
