rdb Report post Posted February 5, 2009 There is no great solution (IMHO). In large applications, you can't apply it with a rag or dauber, except maybe to your white shoes with regular maintanance. To use it at all, for example, on a belt, you must spray it on. Even that means multiple coats, and drying times. And in the end, it is only a temporary surface coating, that will scratch off, sealed or not. It is okay for painting on say, figure carving, in small areas, with a good sealant coating, but it will still be the most temporary of your colored work on a project that is anything more than a showpiece. For any projects that need to be largely white, purchase an already tannery dressed white leather.
TomSwede Report post Posted February 5, 2009 What do you need to do?? Cover surfaces or paint details?? I've done some white details by painting diluted cova-color white in multiple layers. I imagine that this way it'll stick better because it actually sinks in rather than stay on top + it's much easier to avoid streaking this way. Downside is that it really takes lots of layers to cover and make it look really white AND acrylic sealer should be used since cova is waterbased. TwinOaks Report post Posted February 6, 2009 Yep, tannery white leather if you need a lot of it. I've tried just about everything to whiten leather, and painting it is about the easiest way to get small areas. I have even tried bleaching the leather- back to the color of rawhide- but once it's tanned....it's tanned. White shoe polish works well for small non-flexing areas, but it WILL crack off eventually.
