Members jawilliams Posted February 6, 2009 Members Report Posted February 6, 2009 Hey everyone need to know about red and black leather. I think I understand that black is dye, but what about red? Is it a dye or is it a paint? I have entered a contest with a red and black theme and want to do the leather that way. Any advise would be welcome. Thanks, James Quote
Members Tina Posted February 6, 2009 Members Report Posted February 6, 2009 I use red dye from Angelus but I guess there's plenty of other brands out there. Good luck with your contest:-) Quote
Members craftsman827 Posted February 6, 2009 Members Report Posted February 6, 2009 If you want the color to last use dye. Also to get a good & bright RED, try to get the leather light as posable. Veg taned leather has many different shades to begin with. So try and get the lighest you can. Also you may want to reduce the red just a little. so it dont come to dark. Quote

Thanks,James I have gotten great results with Ecoflo Cranberry. I find Fiebing's Oxblood very hot pink/fuschia. I've also had great results with acrylic paint; I like Liquitex Basics Alazarin Crimson. It depends on whether I want all over red or detail. Quote
TomSwede Posted February 6, 2009 Report Posted February 6, 2009 I use Fiebings pro oil dyes and I dilute the red some. I don't have a recipe for how much i dilute it but I use denatured alcohol. Heres a set of bracers where I used a brush to handpaint all the colours. The red looks a bit more pinkish in pic than it really is. I need the red to be not too dark because otherwise it will be too dark after antiquing heavily. Tom Quote
