Members Rayban Posted February 8, 2009 Members Report Posted February 8, 2009 Is this machine suitable for working with leather up to 1/2" thick? (4 layers of 8-10oz.) What is a fair price to pay for one in good working condition? Thanks for your help! RG Quote Raybanwww.rgleather.net

What exactly are you trying to do with it? Quote Ride Safe! Bree 2003 Dyna Wide Glide Memberships: Iron Butt Association, Niagara Falls HOG, Wild Fire HOG NRA, Niagara County Sportsman's Association
Members Rayban Posted February 8, 2009 Author Members Report Posted February 8, 2009 1/2" is too much for this machine. 5/16" is doable. What exactly are you trying to do with it? I make a lot of knife sheaths that often require sewing 3 layers of 8-10oz. together, sometimes 4 or 5 layers. The seller of this machine, who claims he is now using it, told me there would be no problem with the projects I do. Quote Raybanwww.rgleather.net
Members tonyc1 Posted February 9, 2009 Members Report Posted February 9, 2009 The foot feeds the leather through, so the serrations on the foot would mark the grain side of the leather. Tony. Quote
Bree Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 Some people file off the serrations to minimize the footprint. But if you can't fit the leather under the foot, it's all for naught. An unmodified 29 class machine is not designed for 30+ oz of leather. I think the guy was pulling your leg. Quote Ride Safe! Members china Posted February 9, 2009 Members Report Posted February 9, 2009 Hi Rayban I have a 29k71 almost identical machine, I can assure you it will not sew 1/2 leather I have tried! ressult is continuous missed stiches , broken thread, plus broken needles. Ihave managed to sew 3/8 but it struggles, I have purchased a Singer 45k type machine it sews 1/2 inch of leather with ease, in Australia you can purchase one for less than half the price of it's new equivelent, although over hear they are becoming harder to find it good condition. china Quote
Members Rayban Posted February 9, 2009 Author Members Report Posted February 9, 2009 Thanks for ya'llz responses, looks like the 45K is the machine I'm looking for. Quote Raybanwww.rgleather.net
Ambassador Luke Hatley Posted February 9, 2009 Ambassador Report Posted February 9, 2009 RAYBAN.........MAKE A LOT OF KNIFE SHEATHS..........AND INVEST YOUR $$$$$ IN A ARTISAN 3000. YOU WILL BE BETTER OFF IN THE LONG RUN. WITH A CYLENDER ARM MACHINE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO DO DIFFERENT TYPES OF SEWING. IF YOU WANT TO INVEST MORE $$$$$$ CHECK OUT THE SEW-MO 205-370 IT IS A COPY OF AN ADLER. I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH MINE AS LONG AS I HAVE HAD IT. ALMOST 6 YEARS. Quote Luke
