Does anyone in the forum know of a mathematical calculation or a formula for calculating the length of string or lace for a 4 strand, 6, 8, ect, ect, ect, round plait or braid

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The basic one is 1 and 1/2 times the length of the finished braid so for a 6" finished project you need strings at least 9" long.

David Morgan sells a book called: "Braiding Fine Leather" It is pretty much directed at the beginning braider.

Basically it says that you will need 1 and 1/2 times the length of your finished project, plus extra for tassels, etc.

Also it says if you are going to start with middled strands, to measure 1 and 1/2 time the length of your finished project, and then double that number (for middled strands).

Hope this was helpful,

Hilly

I go 1and1/2 more on things I'm braiding that do not have a core and aren't very long. For things with a core I go at least twice as long.
