Stringman Report post Posted March 11, 2009 On the dog leads that you see with the beads, are the beads just slipped on and then secured by stopper knots? I've attached an example.

karen Report post Posted March 12, 2009 I too use a simple turkshead knot to secure my beads. However, if the bead I am using fits very snugly, then I don't bother. Karen
entiendo Report post Posted March 13, 2009 Does anyone know what the minimum size hole should be for a 4 plait with 1/8" kangaroo? I found some lovely beads that I actually like but I don't know what size.
rawhide1 Report post Posted March 13, 2009 entiendo That would depend on how thick your strings are and how tight ya braid. And also how much pressure you apply when rolling the finished braid. I would say your best bet would be to braid something up roll it out and then measure the dia. Mike
entiendo Report post Posted March 13, 2009 (edited) Well I was hoping for kind of a general rule for the size of the opening but your right I can do that too. thanks Edited March 13, 2009 by entiendo
karen Report post Posted March 13, 2009 I find that if you are braiding a 4 strand braid in 1/8" kangaroo, that you will need a hole with at least a 3.2mm hole, though it will be very tight. I try to buy beads with a 3.5 mm hole. Karen

entiendo Report post Posted March 14, 2009 Well finding the opening size of a bead isn't as easy as one would think...
karen Report post Posted March 14, 2009 No it isn't easy, but if you are looking on-line, sometimes they say. If they don't, you can contact the site and ask the hole size. If you are looking for a hole that will be tight, just be aware that even though the stated size might be 3.2 mm, it could be a liitle smaller. Therefore, I always like to go a little bigger. Also, if you are looking at beads with a 3.2 mm hole, you can't string a braided portion, you must thread unbraided strands and then start braiding again after the bead is strung. I don't want any section not to be braided. I would rather go a little larger as I can add braided beads. I like the looks of the leash pictured above but I found a couple more universal tube beads I like, for those not to into the western look. And I did email one company. Again thank you very much. ck9a Report post Posted March 17, 2009 I too use a simple turkshead knot to secure my beads. However, if the bead I am using fits very snugly, then I don't bother.Karen Problem with that is that the leash can stretch, and when it does, it usually thins out as well, which could leave the owner of the leash with beads that wander. My customers are pretty picky about where they want the beads located, so I put stopper knots to both sides of bead/bead clusters to ensure that they stay put. Tony S. I prefer to buy my beads in person. I take sample braids (4-strand uncored, 4-strand cored, and 6-strand double cored) and check that I can get the beads on them. Tony S. animagusbc Report post Posted April 27, 2009 Hi there. Pretty much new to braiding and only mastered the 4 plait braid. I love the way the beading looks on this piece so can someone direct me on where I would find instructions to create the stopper knot to hold the beads in place? Thanks and definitely learning lots from this forum group.
KnotHead Report post Posted April 29, 2009 If the bead hole is too small, a bead shop will carry a bead hole reamer which will aide you in enlarging the hole to fit the finished braid.
denisesleashes Report post Posted September 17, 2010 Can you tell me exactly how to make this turks head knot ? I too use a simple turkshead knot to secure my beads. However, if the bead I am using fits very snugly, then I don't bother. Karen
roo4u Report post Posted September 17, 2010 there is a tutorial pinned in braiding on turksheads...in the example shown at the beginning of this topic the center knot is a pineapple knot, which is a turkshead with an interweave, done over a bead to give it size and shape. then the two knots that are on either end are simple spanish ring knots. ring knots are very easy to do, hardest thing is not breaking the lace when you tighten them . then you simply use smooth jawed pliers to make them flat and push them up against the bead.
