Randyc Report post Posted March 14, 2009 (edited) Hey Guys, These tools are on special at Siegel of California on Ellis Barnes, of Gomph-Hackbarth Tools. I've sold most of my Craftool stamps on EBay and want to upgrade to better quality stamping tools. I haven't done a real lot of stamping or tooling in the past. I'm wondering if this set would be a good assortment of basic stamping tools for me to get into stamping including some Sheridan Floral type carving? The basic set of 15 stamps is $145.00. They also have their Crown brand of stamps on clearence. There normally priced around $9.00-$10.00 per stamp. There on sale for under $5.00 a piece. Does any one use the Crown brand of stamping tools? and what do you think of them. Thanks Randy BASIC SET 1018 ($145.00 For this Set) Edited March 14, 2009 by Randyc
Kevinjohnson Report post Posted March 14, 2009 Can't beat it for the money. Keep in mind that the are tool steel and not stainless. For what the stamps cost, you won't feel as bad grinding or changing certain stamps to fit your style. I bought a set from Ellis last year.
ClayB Report post Posted March 15, 2009 I got this set of stamps from Ellis for Christmas. I've been using them quite a bit and I like them. They make nice crisp impressions. The bevelers in the set are smooth and they have a nice shape to them. They really walk nice. I think they'd be a nice beginner set and there are several tools in the set that will work for Sheridan style carving. Ellis is making a lot more tools out of that tool steel, and the prices on them are anywhere from $25 to $85 each, so the price on this set is REALLY good. Haven't used any of the Crown brand tools so can't comment on them.
MarshalWill Report post Posted March 26, 2009 I also took advantage of the Christmas special this year. They're great stamps and for the price, you probably won't be able to match them. They're a good selection to boot. I've also bought a few extra stamps from Ellis at full retail price and they're still worth it. I do intend to dip them in touch-up bluing to seal the steel so they won't rust.
whinewine Report post Posted March 26, 2009 The Ellis Barnes' tools are excellent tools! In a previous post, I lamented that I would prefer checkered bevelers & checkered pear shaders, but, Oh well- they are still an excellent value, for the price. There are new additions to that line, now, posted at Siegel's. I haven't used the crown tools, so I can't vouch for their quality. russ
