UKRay Report post Posted March 15, 2009 My first thought was shoehorn, but it is far too narrow for that...
scottishshoemaker Report post Posted March 15, 2009 It is used for shoemaking, when you have to put the last back in the shoe to finish off shoe, adding sole and heel. Usually used after fitting stage. Can't remember the name at the moment but use it on a dailly bases.

UKRay Report post Posted March 15, 2009 It never fails to amaze me that the most peculiar tools can be indentified in minutes here... even though I know what it is for (thanks SS), I would still like to know what this thing is called. Any offers? I had never seen a picture of the Barnsley works, Barra - it isn't too far away from me so I'll have to go and see if it is still there one day soon. I went over to visit Joseph Dixon's works last week and got a quick look at their tool room. Most interesting. I'm heading back again next month to pick up some more bits and hopefully get the full guided tour.

scottishshoemaker Report post Posted March 16, 2009 Ok UKRay just checked my old barnsley catalogues, and its called a Steel Shoe Lift No.6188. You can still get most of Barnsley's stock from a company in Sheffield called Woodware Repetitions Ltd, 47 Mowbray st, Sheffield. S3 8EN, 0114 272 6060. They are related to the original George Barnsley and bought all ex stock and machines for making the tools, worth a call for that elusive tool.
