Members sandycreek Posted March 29, 2009 Members Report Posted March 29, 2009 Hi All, We owe one of my wife's friends a favor, and she seemed interested in a handmade wristband/cuff (not sure what the difference is). She wants black exterior/ blue liner and she really likes the looks of a laced edge. The colors are no problem. My question is, does having a laced edge on a wristband make it uncomfortable to wear compared to a sewn and burnished edge for example? I'll probably make the lacing out of some 1-2 oz calf hide scraps that I have, and use a double loop lacing to completely cover the edges. I'm just worried that since the lacing might end up slightly thicker than the wristband itself, that it would cause excessive rubbing or chaffing on the skin. Anybody have any thoughts about this? Thanks in advance! -Aaron Quote
Contributing Member TwinOaks Posted March 29, 2009 Contributing Member Report Posted March 29, 2009 It's going to depend on the texture of the leather for the lace. Using old, dried up chrome tanned crap leather for the lace would make an uncomfortable edge. Using a good textured leather (Tandy's Superior Lace, or perhaps goatskin lace) won't be bad at all. Contributing Member Jordan Posted March 29, 2009 Contributing Member Report Posted March 29, 2009 I used tandy lace on my watchband, mexican weave is what the book called it. It is real comfortable. Quote
TomSwede Posted March 29, 2009 Report Posted March 29, 2009 This bracer with a mexican basket weaved edge was made to fit really really snug at my wrist as I figured it would stretch some. Even tough the snug fit I didn't experience any particular discomfort during the first weeks or afterwards so I definetly recommend you have a go at it. I haven't tried with big bracers and laced edges but a bigger bracer has more of a tendency to push downwards against the wrist/hand in my experience. Yeah, I mostly use the third word, bracer for my armbands even tough cuff and wristband is commonly used. I would also like to know the difference between those (if there are any??) Tom Quote
ShirleyT Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 TomSwede - LOVE the wristbandbracercuff. We girls tend to call them cuffs, makes us feel a little dangerous when buying leather fashion cuffs...and we make a bunch of more girly ones here at our workshop. I really like the photo you posted and I am instantly wanting to learn how to make one too...wow! Question - does the fastener/catch hold up well? Easy off and on? Catch on things? etc? And do you do classes? SO many questions... Quote

Ah that's what cuffs are for I used this one for about 8-10 months now and the fastener seem to hold up well alltough it is a very tiny strip of leather where I made the notch. This is also the main reason I choose to line thise one, to get more strength by adding the top grain with a thinner leather. Thin cow is what I used. MAkes it really smooth and nice against the arm. Read through the post I did with this one, I think I answered alot of questions there and if you still wonder about anything just PM me. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?a...p;hl=&st=25 I'm a bit caught up with something called life at the moment so I'm a bit on and off with the leatherwork but try to check in here daily. Members sandycreek Posted March 31, 2009 Author Members Report Posted March 31, 2009 Thanks for the advice everyone! Jordan: Nice watchband, elegant and simple. That's about what I'm picturing, minus the watch. Have to see what the wife's friend thinks. Tom: I like the wristband, especially that medallion piece. Now just gotta find some free-time to get it made. I thought I had some free-time around here somewhere, but I sat it down, and the wife must have accidentally thrown it away Thanks -Aaron Quote
