Python Skin

Hi All,

I've done some research on python skins, it seems not all python skins look the same. Some have big or small scales.

I'm interested in the skins with the larger more pronounced scales. I provided URLs to give everyone an idea of what I'm looking for (I'm making my own "designer" exotic handbag, please excuse the links below as these are the only examples I could find).

What type of python these skins come from (African, Ball, Burmese, etc.)?

I do understand the large scales are located on the 'belly' part of the snake. Perhaps the skins used were from a very large python. The purses above are practically covered with large scales. I've seen other python bags, but the bigger scales are more attractive to me than the small.

I am also looking for a supplier as well and would like to know the different grade qualities? (I will probably post this in the supplier forum as well).

The first one looks to be a burmese and a larger one, the others were much smaller or younger ones but hard to tell what type since they were died.

Most all of the large or really large python skins are gonna be from burmese as these are the largest if I remember right, african, retics, and such get pretty big also but not as quick. The ball is only gonna get a few feet over a longer period of time and since they make good pets so they fetch a decent price or did.

Another thing you have to remember is that the scales are gonna be bigger on a larger animal, and when that animal skin is stretched its gonna look like that first bag. In the living animal you wont see the scales placed like that unless it has just eaten a large meal and its skin is stretched out. Other wise the scales will be nice and close together.

Sorry I worked at a snake breeder and wholesaler when I was in the teens but that was a while ago.

I have observed that there is 2 ways of cutting a snake up to make a skin...

Most seams to get cut along the belly, the big scales you're talking about which means that the colored top part of the snakes skinn is gooing to be little disturbed as possible.

Then some cut the snake along the spinal cord on the top back, now you get the part on the belly undisturbed and I think this is what you want. The only snake/s I have seen cut like this is the cobra and the grass snakes from Asia.

I have seen some sellers on Ebay from the Phillipines tha have snake/lizzard skinns...They might be able to get you the type you want?

Hi Tina, thank you for the warm welcome! That is a great observation, I never thought about and it makes sense. I'm wanting the snake cut along the top portion to give me the belly scales undisturbed. I'm going search on Ebay today for those sellers. I also emailed Ostrich Market (wow, they have some nice skins!), waiting for a reply soon.
