Members anester05 Posted April 29, 2009 Members Report Posted April 29, 2009 I am about to finish my dogs collar I just made and wanted to get some ideas on what finish to use on the collar. My grandfather always just used Tan Kote on belts, he didn't stain belts he just tooled and used Tan Kote. I do not plan on staining the collar because my dog is lets just say rambunctious. So I am planing on using Neats Foot oil, then a coat of Tan Kote. Any Suggestions Appreciated. Quote
Members kevinhopkins Posted April 29, 2009 Members Report Posted April 29, 2009 Hi... There's a million different finishes out there, and most of them are fairly good. Tan kote, however, is extremely mild. It's really not much of a protector at all. Tan kote is used extensively in reducing various fiebings stains, and it helps in evening out the way that the leather takes the stain. But as a final finish, it's just weak. If that doesn't matter to you, then you're fine. But if you need protection, then you might consider some of the more common finishes such as the various oils, acrylics such as pro clear, super shene, resolene, leather balm, to name a few. I like pro clear or saddle lac for collars. Hope this helps! Kevin Hopkins Quote

You think you have problems with a finish for a DOG collar,Hopper as me is affectionately known, when not trashing the place Slobbers, drawls. It quite common for 18" tendrils with encrusted biscuits. I enclose pic to show what my problem boy looks like (9 months old in the pic ) Kindest Regards Paul Quote
