Members trapmonkey Posted May 11, 2009 Members Report Posted May 11, 2009 Dear all, I need some advice and help please. I have a tanned ostrich leather from a mature male ostrich that i hunted in south africa. I'm not much of a guy for arts and crafts, getting my sig gsr 5 "1911 put back together is about the limit of my dexterity. I was wondering if there is anyone on this board who makes their own holsters and could make a holster out of this. I believe that the leather weight is in the 4-6 ounce bag leather category (though don't quote me cos i'm no leather worker)and it is about 1.5metre long and 1 metre across at its widest points. Its been vege dyed a natural brown. I can email pics if needed. I live in singapore and am willing to ship it to where ever it needs to go, maybe we can do a deal because I believe there is ample leather to do 2 holsters and perhaps 2 dbl mag carriers, perhaps more if the leather is used only as accents and covers. I give you the leather and we each get a holster and mag carrier? I just thought it would be darn cool to have and IDPA OWB type holster for my 1911 from my own ostrich. By the way i'm not looking for the professional holster gurus, i'm looking at this as a project for a hobby leather holster maker. After all i'm sure the really cool leather guys have ostrich in their stocks already. I'll happily pay for shipping both ways if there are like minded people out there. Many thanks for hearing me out. cheers, TM btw this is a darn cool forum! Quote

Lobo Posted May 11, 2009 Report Posted May 11, 2009 With the ostrich skin in the weight you describe, I would suggest using veg-tanned cowhide of about 4 to 6 oz. weight as a lining (cement the ostrich skin to the cowhide, cut and form the pieces with the smooth cowhide on the interior). This should result in a very durable finished product that will hold its shape very well, also providing a nice smooth lining Interesting project for the right person, someone experienced in exotic leathers Quote

Members kevinhopkins Posted May 14, 2009 Members Report Posted May 14, 2009 Just a thought, but you might want to make sure that it's ok to ship that hide from the country you're in.... Hopefully it is... I know that in the U.S. there are a lot of skins that will get held up in customs... Might be worth looking into... Kevin Quote
