I know the ends are bad sill doing practic on getting them to look nice. You mention edging and that is most important for me on this design and gettin the crossover pieces to match the longside edge so you can burnish them together to look more like they were of on piece and not two. Maybe glue the crossover pieces before setting the spots. A piece of jeans work well for burninshin on a slightly wet edge but with all details on this one I'd go for somekind of bonefolder to work into corners.
