TomLine Report post Posted June 25, 2009 Somebody asked me to try a Milt Sparks style holster. So I did. They came out pretty good. The 1911 one is still wet in the one picture. I wet moulded twice. First with regular water. Then dried it, then put maybe 10% ammonia in the water to stiffen up the leather. I DID NOT use any metal stiffener in the strap. I used gum trag on the rough side as a last step. I still could use a bit of critique on my edges I think. What turns the union black where the pieces meet?? dbusarow Report post Posted June 26, 2009 The design is actually Bruce Nelson's Summer Special. Milt Sparks makes them as does just about everyone else. Yours came out real nice. I'm not sure what you mean by the "black where the pieces meet". I don't see any black here. Dan
rdb Report post Posted June 26, 2009 (edited) Are you talking about the line on edges? If so, that can sometimes be tricky. Could be anything like....Too hard/fast burnishing can be one cause. Seams not glued as tight as they can be. See hidepounders edge burnishing topic for an excellent breakdown to the edging process. You did a great job on the holster and mag. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?a...st&id=26832 http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?s...c=17332&hl= Edited June 26, 2009 by rdb
Lobo Report post Posted June 26, 2009 Nice looking work. The little dark line between the layers of the burnished edge could be the cement used, possibly a reaction to the burnishing friction. I don't see it as a problem at all.
