BearMan Report post Posted July 7, 2009 Hi Everybody, Here is my latest Maul. I wanted to make something completely different. How'd I do?? It's 18oz with a Bubinga & Green Diamondwood handle, capped with a piece of Zebrawood. The head is 2 1/4" X 2 1/4" in a polymer that is not quite as hard as the Nylon ones. I'll have to let you know how it preforms in the long run, but, so far, it feels very good while stamping. A little bit less shock on the hand, feels a little bit more like rawhide. As you can see, I have a Temporary nut on the end, which will be replaced with an Acorn nut, as soon as I can pick one up. Please let me know what You think. azrider Report post Posted July 7, 2009 Wow! Your mauls are really nice looking. Almost would hate to use them as tools. (But the ones I got from you sure work great!) Look forward to hearing how this works out for long term for you.
hidepounder Report post Posted July 7, 2009 Wow Ed, that's nice! Looks really good, can't wait to hear the final verdict on performance. Will this material flake as it become worn like nylon does? Also, what is that fancy decorative piece under the cap. Nice touch recessing the cap, by the way! Bob
King's X Report post Posted July 7, 2009 Bearman: The wood handle is something to envy.....beautiful! But I have to ask, is that head a roller skate wheel?
KcKenny Report post Posted July 7, 2009 I was just goig to say what King did. I'm pretty sure you're pulling a fast one and putting a roller skate wheel on a pretty handle. Hope that thing has tough bearings. Love the custom look though, I just bought one of those cheap 20 oz Urethane mallets for woodworking today. Beats the yellow plastic Tandy one I was learning on. BearMan Report post Posted July 7, 2009 Thanks Adam, Bob, King's X, Kenny & Kevin. Thanks for all the compliments. The head was actually a wheel for a cart in a factory where steam & heat was used. It does look like the old roller skate wheels. Hmmm... I may have to look into that. I know that the old skate wheel came in different hardnesses. I'll let you know in a few months how it stands up to use & abuse. Adam & Kevin,,, I'm really glad you are enjoying yours. Thanks again,,,, Ed
