JohnBarton Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 Nicely done, I havent heard of these since I was in school. That is a very elegent looking case. Just out of curiosity did you have a picture of the back of it by chance. :-) Were you in school in the 1400s? Just kidding - your statement sounded like 'we used to use these in school' - maybe I need my drugs..... Quote Support Quality. We are all humans. Buy the best no matter where it's made. MADMAX22 Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 The batteries on my camera died while taking the last of the pictures for the documentation... but I will take a picture as soon as I have more. Meanwhile, the back is plain and flat and you can tell I need more practice using an awl!! I think we all do :-) Were you in school in the 1400s? Just kidding - your statement sounded like 'we used to use these in school' - maybe I need my drugs..... Nope missed the 1400's lol, I just have not heard hide nor hair any mention of these since history class. One of those things you learn about and then dont even think about for a few (or 20) years then bam here they are lol. Quote

Members jana Posted July 13, 2009 Author Members Report Posted July 13, 2009 i thought it would make a good project then, but i never got around to it. Ken, I would encourage you to go ahead and give it a try....the interesting thing about re-creating period leatherwork is that it brings home the fact that we are definitely keeping the art alive. Members fishguy Posted July 14, 2009 Members Report Posted July 14, 2009 (edited) nice job, the tablets are a little easier to read if you mix some black pigment into the wax, bone black from an art store is non toxic, reasonably period, and works well. Made a few of them to sell at SCA events, not particularly successful though. I always thought about making a medieval palm pilot with wax tablet, abacus (yes they used them in Europe too, that's how you add and subtract with roman numerals) and sundial, all bound together like a book. I wanted to add black to the beeswax but the only thing I had on hand was black watercolor and when added to the hot wax it just beaded up on the bottom of the pan and did not mix, the reading I did suggested lamp black. Is bone black a powder? Quote Jana "A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step." - Chinese Proverb
