help in identifying please

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

Over the last year or so I've purchased some 'old leatherworking tools'. Some were easy enough to identify, even with my limited knowledge, others not so. Does anyone know what any of these are and what they were used for? Even one or two would be a help. Was I sold a bum lot with these particular tools?

Cheers

Dave

hi whitebeard...i can help you with the ones with the balls on the ends...i have a full set of these..they were originally milliners tools for making flowers to go on hats..usually from the 30's and 40's i think...i use them in my mask making for shaping leather...i know i will find another use for them one day.

Most of them look like shoe repairer's tools - perhaps CelticLeather can help here?

Thanks leatheroo. I knew they'd be useful for molding although it's not something I've tried yet! Didn't think of hats though!

I'm pretty sure the tools in picture 1 are edge irons, and the ones in the left in picture 2 are called Glazing irons and were used in finishing the soles and heels of shoes. In the last picture, the odd looking knife is called a drag knife. I found a description in "Dictionary of Leather-Working Tools, c.1700-1950" by R.A Salaman. Sorry not sure about the others.
