Hat Brim stiffener material

Recommended Posts

Hello:

I have a question. At some point, I would like to make a cap in leather, but I'm unsure about how to make the brim. I know I can use a stiff, thick piece of veg-tan, (I've made apple caps before) but I'm wondering what I would use as a stiffener between 2 thin pieces of garment-type leather of the same stuff I'd make the rest of the cap from... :begging: I wouldn't want to use cardboard, for obvious reasons. Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance.

I have used Bontex Bag Stiffener, from Tandy. So far, it has worked quite well.

A couple of years ago, . . . just for kicks and giggles, . . . I made a suede & veggie tan copy of the USMC type soft cap. It has a bill and all, . . . similar to a baseball cap.

I used two pieces of 3/4 oz leather for the bill, . . . cemented together with contact cement, . . . finished the edges really well, . . . it has held up with no problems at all.

I would use a piece of veggie tan between your garment leathers, . . . again, just contact cement the whole thing together and finish the edges well, . . . I think you will like the result. You might try a small version first to see how it works for you.

May God bless,

Dwight

Have you considered a wire stiffener in the edge?

Depending upon your feelings about using synthetic materials, have you considered using a piece of plastic, cut from the side of a 5-litre container? It could be sewn between two layers of garment-weight leather, and no-one would ever know!

Unfortunately, that wouldn't work. I'll be using garment leather- the main part of the brim would sag.

I've decided to get a large piece of bontex - it's very inexpensive for its size & can be used as a stiffener for other projects, and it glues easily to leather, whereas plastic might not.

Thanks for everyone's help on this. I appreciate it. This is the most useful site ever!
