Pro's & Con's to closed bottom Pocket holster

Recommended Posts

I'm ready to cut and make a number of pocket holsters for a show and, I seem to argue with myself (does anyone else do that) about closing the bottom. On one hand, it makes for slightly more pronounced bottom and anything left in pocket can enter barrel. On the other hand it makes holster longer and things can still end up in bottom of holster to perhhaps enter barrel.

What is generally considered best? And, I'd put safety 1st, un-noticable 2nd, and looks last.

I'd appreciate you views.

Thanks,

Regis

We all have personal preferences. My preference is a closed bottom for pocket holsters.

What is best is what the customers want.

Why not make up several of each, give the customers a choice to obtain their own preference? This might help you better identify your marketplace.

That is great idea......market will definately decide.......that's why, after a few shows I still have few nice OWB (P226 & 1911's) that only fit one inch belts [lol]. Nobody wants them.

Regis:

It really depends on the overall design of the holster itself and the gun being carried. A closed-bottom holster lends itself to allowing the gun and holster to flop around in the pocket. The majority of the closed-bottom holsters that I've seen by some makers really exacerbate this. An open-bottom holster lends itself to being more stabilized in the pocket. It's much easier also to keep the lint/dirt out of the pocket than out of a closed-bottom holster.

With my entire line (all two of them!!!) of pocket holsters, I've made them closed bottom. I make them in the "clamshell" style, with the fold at the muzzle. They were for 2 shot derringers, and the owners were experienced enough with concealed carry that nothing but the pistol went in that pocket. They're molded tightly enough to keep most debris out.
