morning

had a friend ask if i could make him some spur straps i am just strating in leatherworking and wanted to know good weight of leather to use

Hi David,

If you are going to just make a simple pair and not back it with anything then 8/9 will be heavy enough. When I first started I made a pair for my wife and she wears them almost daily and has held up well. If you are wanting to make a higher end pair then I would probably use 6/7 backed with some 4/5 or just 4/5 doubled. Hope this helps.

I use 7/8 oz leather and line it with 2/3 oz. Like Will said, however, 8/9 is adequate.
