rgerbitz Report post Posted October 30, 2009 Hello Everyone, I am hoping to gain some insight from some of the experts here. A friend of my fathers has a Pfaff 145 h4 6710 that has been taking up space in his garage since the 80's. He told me if it something that I can use that he would be happy to allow me to "store" it for him. I have been making lined spur and slobber leathers and am planning on doing some more chinks, chaps and the like. Will this machine be able to do that? I suppose some of the thichest I might sew would be 18 oz. all together. (brest collars and such). Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time, Rob

Thank you for your time, Rob Rob, I use pfaff 545, very similar machine to the 145, the difference being the 545 has larger diameter bobbin, I believe they use the same needle 190lr. I am using a 140 or 22 size with a 138 thread on top and in the bobbin. I really like the tightness and appearence of the stitch.I use this machine to sew, belts ,spur straps, chap yokes and shields. About the thickest I sew is 8 -9 oz. veg tan over 4-5 oz. chap leather.I have not sew any breast collars with it.The machine is gear driven internally as opossed to an internal belt. It has reverse. I would give it a try if you have the chance to do so. Steve
Art Report post Posted October 31, 2009 It is a great medium weight machine, should handle up to 20oz easily. What motor does it have?, if it is a fast one, you might want to change it out to a servo. See if you can get smooth feet and dog from Superior or maybe Ferdco. It will be a good chap machine, breast collars and spur straps too when you slow it down. Art Hello Everyone, I am hoping to gain some insight from some of the experts here. I think I will go ahead and get it. I think I will be needing some more help once I get it here. Aside from posting on this forum are there any sources for help in the way of parts and etc... Art Report post Posted October 31, 2009 Hi Rob, Bob Kovar is over in Toledo Ohio, Steve Tayrien is out in California. I know that machine pretty well, and Steve, Bob (and little Bob) have been working on them for years. We're all right here. Steve is The Leather Machine Company http://leathermachineco.com/ and Bob is Toledo Sewing Machine S/S. Don't know if Bob has an ad here, but he's in the book.
