Bench Sizes?

Recommended Posts

Well I have been thinking of building a bench for my self to tool on and dye on. As all that I am using now is an old wooden desk. I would like to have a little more room. I have searched and seen all of your guys pictures of your benches, but I didnt see any sizes. (Maybe I just didnt read enough) lol. Anyway, what do you all think would be the best size to make a bench? And at what height? With my idea I have been thinking of making it at two levels. One that I could sit down at and one I could stand up at. But Im not too sure of the height. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Chris

My stampng bench 43 inches tall, 5 foot wide, 28 inches deep, there is a back board that holds staming tools and other tools as well, I have 3 inch thick granite that is 18x24, and is inlaid flush with the bench.I use a bar stool to sit in or I can work standing. My other bench is 4x8 3/4 ply wood with a 3/8 poly4x8 over top the ply wood, there are two level of shevles to store leather ect. it is 3 ft tall. I use this bench to roll out hides, and to do cutting and pattern layout.

A bench is going to depend on what you are making. Of course the space you have available will to a certain extent dictate what you can do. I make my benches the height from the floor to my elbow/forearm when perpendicular to the floor. Others use the rule of thumb - floor to hip and add an inch. This works out about the same. Some make their work bench and stamp bench extend into each other all the same height. This comes in handy if you are cutting out long strap goods as the strapping does not hang over a sharp bench edge and risk being marred.

My table is about 35 inches tall and 4x8 foot. On the end i do my punching i screwed and glued it solid across with pieces of 2/4 about 36 iches down the length table to help keep it from bouncing so bad. It has 5/8 playwood on the top. I was lucky to find a store going out of business and got 5 sets of drawers like they use for VHS tape rentals for free. I keep the tools i use all of the time in one set and hardware and nylon in the rest of the drawers. In the near furture i hope to build another table to roll out and straighten hides and lay out patterns like Steveh has.
