I have a tooled wall hanging that I don't want to frame. I though about mounting on a board but, the edges (leather & wood) really do not look right at all for this one. What are some other choices for backing 8 oz leather for a wall hanging.

Thanks,

Regis,

I mounted a huge carving recently and made the wood backing smaller than the carving by about 1/4"

That way the leather hangs slightly away from the wall and you do not see the wood - it really has a nice effect.

Regis, could you back it with a thin piece of some kind of plastic, like cutting board or something. Then drill holes and lace the outer edge?

The "slightly" smaller board may work ok. I like the lace idea but, not for this one..

Regis what about mounting on the plywood, fold the edges back and use upholstry, brass or nickle domed

head tacks about 1" apart around the premiter of the hanging?

also in the curtain dept of Penneys there are brass curtain rods and clips that you could use. :Lighten:

Regis, how about this one , if you like it the way it is and don't want to add anymore to it with an edging or a backing that shows, how about a leather backing ? the edge can be finished along with the hanging itself and should disappear, for a wall hanging glueing it up with Barge contact cement or something similiar would be sufficient if it's hanging on the wall for appearance only sewing or binding the edge wouldn't be absolutely nescesary. A good glue job on something like that will take tools to ever seperate.

I like the leather back but the leather is now trying to curl a bit so I think I will glue to a thin plywood board slightly smaller than the leather and taper the board edges back. I can still add leather backing if necessary to give me good edges to finish.

I appreciate the discussion.
