tgidry Report post Posted December 12, 2009 I finally located a boot patcher and it was only 12 miles down the road. Its a Singer 29k72 and it has been in storage for about 26 years so I'll give it a going over before I start to use it. I will need some advice and possibly some parts. Its in decent shape and the previous owner said that it worked the day that he put in storage and it will definitely need to be oiled. Also got a strap cutter (I guess that is what its called) he said that he used this to cut belt blanks with. Parts suppliers for the 29k would be useful. Here is a couple pictures. The cutter is an American sole cutter and skiver. Very useful tool. Toledo Industrial Sewing Machine has parts for these machines. They located in Toledo, Ohio 866-362-7397. Good luck and happy sewing!
tgidry Report post Posted December 13, 2009 (edited) Rayno, thanks for the info on the cutter. Would you or anyone else know a value on the cutter. It seems to be in decent working condition and just needs to be cleaned up. The owner is a friend of the family and I really want to give him a fair price for it. He owned the shoe repair shop and retired about 26 years ago. He has other equipment that he would like to sell. One in particular is a Landis model 12K that I'll be post in the FOR SELL forum later. Again thanks for the help. Tucker Edited December 13, 2009 by tgidry

UKRay Report post Posted December 15, 2009 Tgidry, this may seem like a foolish question, but what, exactly, are you going to do with that machine? I believe it was designed to cut really heavy duty soling leather rather than belt or strap leather. Do you make boots and shoes? Ray

Ray Ray i have two of these Leather cutters , they are by Adler. now they are not for light weight leather, but they cut, Holsters, knife sheaths and sturrup leathers very well. I do not do shoes or boots it just happened to be next to the machine when I pulled it out of storage. You are right about the use of it. I said the owner told me that he cut belts with it. His exact words were "utility belts and that it was an over kill to use it but the arthritis in his hands was starting to get worse". I'll clean it up and keep it just in case. I believe it was designed to cut really heavy duty soling leather rather than belt or strap leather. Do you make boots and shoes? Ray The 'strap cutter' is actually a 'ranging machine', and as Ray says, it was designed to cut heavy leather (or rubber) soles. We used to have one at the shop, but the gears broke (cast iron!) and the handle went missing, so I dumped it last month when we moved shop. I should think it would be difficult to use it to cut belts or straps . . . the cut is not very controllable. It was only intended to 'rough-cut' the soles, which would then be trimmed to size after attaching to the boot. Our machine would also leave rather unattractive 'railway lines' on the underside of the material.
