Bryan Report post Posted December 28, 2009 (edited) Richard, I am by no means an expert, but one suggestion that I have is to fade out your backgrounding. That is, hitting your background tool harder when it is up near your carving, then lighter & lighter as you move further away from it. I sometimes also use a modeling spoon to help fade. By the way, I do like the coloring & I really like the design on the second purse. Cheers Edited December 28, 2009 by Bryan
Storm Report post Posted December 29, 2009 (edited) Hi Richard, First let me say that your purses are very nice for someone just starting out. I like the pattern with the oak leave and the Dogwood flowers. So I hope you do not mind but I amde up a pattern from the photo you supplied and changed it a bit here and there and then carved it in leather. Forgive my French as it rather sucks! As Bryan noted, you need work on the backgrounding. Practice on some scrap leather until it feels comfortable. While I think that a pattern is not unlike sheet music and everyone plays it differently there are usually common approaches to stamping. I will cut the pattern with a swivel knife and then I use my Pear Shaders. After that I use an Undercut Beveler followed by my Smooth Bevelers. Then the Flower Center or Seeders and Stops inside the flowers. I then use a hair Blade on the leaf stems and ad my decorative cuts. Last I will do my backgrounding. You need to try and feather out your pear shader as you walk it slowly forward. Use a modeling tool to smooth out the areas that do not feel right. I like the pattern and as I have not seen it before feel you must have created it yourself. Attached is my version of your pattern. Ci-joint mon version de votre modèle. electrathon Report post Posted December 29, 2009 Critique: On the leaves. When you are using the veiner, it needs to point both out and tword the tip of the leave. You have a lot of them tipping to the base of the leave. Look ar a real leave and you will see the proper direction for them to go. It is very comon to make this mistake because of the curve of the veiner tool. It almost seems wrong to do it properly till after you hit it and remove the tool.
