Members Vikti Posted January 2, 2010 Members Report Posted January 2, 2010 I tried to rework a belt for my father in law for x-mas. I cut it out, dyed & buffed it out to a nice shine but I noticed about half way through putting some decorative stitching on it that the white thread was picking up the dye. Did I not let it set long enough after dying? (it sat for about 24 hrs.) I used Fiebing black dye Damon Quote
Ambassador Luke Hatley Posted January 2, 2010 Ambassador Report Posted January 2, 2010 BUFF.....BUFF..... BUFF..... LET IT DRY LONGER, THEN APPLY (OR I DO APPLY SUPER SHEEN) DO YOU USE FIEBINGS OIL DYE ? Quote
Members Rawhide Posted January 2, 2010 Members Report Posted January 2, 2010 Be sure to wax your thread very well. Also put a stitching groove in the leather, this minimizes the contact of the cord with the dye. Quote
TimKleffner Posted January 2, 2010 Report Posted January 2, 2010 After you oiled and dyed, did you put a finish coat on before you sewed? Black dye , especially, has lots of excess pigments. Acrylic Resolene is always good to finish black dye. Good luck Happy tooling Tim Quote
Members Vikti Posted January 3, 2010 Author Members Report Posted January 3, 2010 I'm using the oil based dye and no I forgot to put some leather sheen on it. I have a new piece cut out and I'll try to make it again. Thanks for the help. Damon Quote
