Ok so I have a couple of requests from a customer that is asking for some pretty specific additions to her dog collars she has ordered. There are 2 collar and 2 leash sets for the "Gamekeepers Exhibition 2010".

1. She wants plaques that can be engraved, ok simple enough, but they have to be brass or brass coloured.

2. She wants brass bands that clamp around the back of the collar giving it a sort of striped effect. She wants 8 of these on each.

Now this is my first customer who likes to change her mind on a daily basis, which makes things super fun!! Not.

What exactly do you need help with? Finding the materials? There are several metal stamping suppliers that may be willing to sell brass in smaller ammounts. I was at a convention in Birmingham and I remember several not having minimum order requirements, but names and locations escape me . The brass bands sound easy, that is if I understand what you mean.. I would cut the ends of the brass strips sharp. I would then wrap the piece around the leather collar and then attach it by sliding it through thin slits in the leather and bending it in at a 90 degree angle back towards itself and into the leather. This would keep the doggies from getting hurt.

I could draw a picture if what I'm saying makes little sense, sometimes what I have a hard time conveying a concept without pictures.

As for annoying clients, I don't think there is anyone in the world that doesn't have one or two. My willingness to deal with these people depends entirely on their willingness to pay with cash. Maybe you could implement a limit on changes, or a deadline to submit them by for an order.

I was hoping to get some ideas where to get these items? I'm going to try a trophy shop on the way home from work today. As for the brass bands yeah I think I understand what you are saying, just bend it over the edge. I'm a little worried they will come off, but then again these are show collars not intended for everyday use. thanks, Mike.

For such a small order you may need to actually pay *meep* retail for the brass. Hobby Lobby actually sells plate metal for jewlers. It may be thin enough for your needs. A good ol' hacksaw should cut it. So would tin snips. Good luck on straight cuts, they won't be fun.

Stop at your local Ace Hardware, Home Depot, Lowes etc. Pick up a brass kick plate for doors. This is about the right thickness for the plates and may work for the bands. Best cut with bench jig saw or lacking that a coping saw with a fine tooth metal cutting blade. If you use it for the bands also you will need to anneal it before bending. Simple to do just heat cherry red and quench in water. Makes it dead soft and easy to bend. Hope this helps.
