chainftw Report post Posted January 15, 2010 I have heard that some people after all the carving and tooling is done wet the piece down and roll it to flatten the tooling . Has anyone done this and how does it work ?
Storm Report post Posted January 15, 2010 :wtf: I guess I am going to go out on a limb with this one but......why in heavens name would someone go to all the trouble of trying to get good depth on a piece of handtooled leather and then stick it under a roller and flatten it out? Seems to me that that might be defeating the purpose of the hand tooling all together. But in answer to your question...in over 30 years of doing this I have never heard of anyone doing that sort of thing. Are you sure someone wasn't having you on and pulling your leg? abn Report post Posted January 15, 2010 I'm with Storm... I've never heard of this, nor would I do it. Occasionally, I'll smooth out rough stamped impressions using the spoon of a modeling tool. But I wouldn't roll or compress the entire surface. Just let it dry and harden up. Good luck, -Alex
Hilly Report post Posted January 15, 2010 Are you sure you heard that right? A lot of us smooth the leather through a process called "slicking" before we tool the leather. I'm with the other guys here. I've never heard of doing it after tooling...
leatherman1457 Report post Posted January 15, 2010 Chain, I go back with a modeling tool and I smooth out the edges of the tooling to get rid of the sharp edges . What that does is to give it a more muted effect and make it look more realistic,I some times will lightly dampen the leather and place a box on top of it with a couple of pounds in it if I did not back the leather and it cups on me while tooling . That does flatten out the leather, but I have never heard of casing the leather and then rolling it.that is a new one on me.

I glass and spoon my leather also but I know they said they do this and it turns out great .I haven't tried it and I don't think I will but just curious if anyone else does this .Thanks for all the responses , Chain
