This is my third attempt at drawing up my own patterns. I am always open to any critiques.

I like that quite a bit. I'd suggest that on the leaves where you've added a turnback, that you don't connect the line back to the leaf at the bottom. I think if you carve it that way, it'll look like something laying on top of the leaf. If it's not attached, it will give the appearance of being folded over which I think is what you are going for. Not sure I've seen a leaf of that type with a turn back before but I like it.

I think that the turnback on the leaf on the right is too big for the scale of the leaf. Either the turnback should be smaller or the leaf a little bit bigger. Other than that this looks great. When are you going to tool it?

ClayB - I meant to do a turn back and I notice what you are talking about. I will have to keep that in mind when I tool it.

TimDreamer- I tried to keep them proportion to everything else. I will take another look and see how I will change it.

I hope to tool it this weekend. I am off and home with the kids for spring break.

No artist Doc, just something I would like to conquer a bit. I hope to take this whole year to learn more pattern designing.

I like what your doing. I would like to suggest a couple things you may not notice until your done tooling.

These are very small things, but might help with the finished product.

1. Tim is right about the turned back leaf being too big and out of proportion. Easy fix is to make a paper pattern of the leaf flat then place it there and fold it back to where you want it. That takes the guess work out of size proportion.

2. Between that turn back leaf and the one below it is a big triangle space for background. I think it will stand out when tooled since it is bigger than the rest. Easy fix try to fill in that space a little.

3. It might look a little odd to the eye when you have three flowers the same and two different in a five flower pattern. Easy fix is to make the center flower the only different one. Or the top right and bottom left match and top left and bottom right match.

It makes sense. I was thinking about changing the flower to all different or like you said the middle want different.

As for the leaf, when I went back and look at it, I saw what you and others were saying. I will take your advice.

As for the space, I put a sticker there. I may not put it in and just put my bench stamp there. I don't know yet, but I will fill it in.

One of the things that I do when I draw a pattern is to color in the background. It will reveal a lot about your pattern that is just not obvious otherwise. A good example is what Casey identified as an area with too much background. I think it is important to try to keep the size of the background area relatively uniform throughout the design. Coloring in the background will also tell you whether the vine work is too coarse or too flimsy for the pattern. You will also notice flow problems by coloring in the background. It's a good habit to get into.
