Ruger Blackhawk Leather

Here is one I finished for a Ruger 44 Special I have. It's a 4 5/8" BBL gun. I based it on the Bianchi #1, but with a thong (not THAT kind!) instead of snap.

How would one use a snap without having it scratch their gun?

I've made some changes to the pattern now... I curved it down a bit near the sight and shortened it a touch (this one is about 1/4" long for my liking as well as making the loop a part of the one piece pattern, instead of adding it seperate.

For those who have made an Elmer Keith No. 5 style holster.... how much leather needs to be long (past the end of the bbl) to sew that shut?

The way to avoid the scratches from the snap is to add more leather. Make the strap out of thinner leather (or skive/split it) and use two pieces. Install the snap's base and post, then sandwich it with the leather.

Nice looking holster. I have the same pistol with a 5.5 inch barrel. Took a deer with it this year. I love the 44 special.

I've been eyeballing a SBH in SS, w/ a 10" bbl, .44 mag. I've already shot it, and despite the heavy caliber, the weight of the gun more than compensates for it. I just can't justify getting it.......

ShortBBL, you need to go about 3/4" longer to sew her shut. Personally, I'd also round the toe a bit if you are going to do it. Also (another a personal preference) I prefer to make the belt loop integral with the holster, rather than an add on. It seems stronger to me and less susceptible to stretching and getting loose on the belt. I also am a great fan of the .44 Special. My carry gun in winter is a 3" S&W Model 24 round butt, .44 Special only. Summer time here in the desert it's usually a smaller gun, now a Charter Arms Bulldog .44 that I can carry in shorts and a tank top. My son had two and I swapped him out of one. Mike.

I've already changed the pattern to one with integral belt loop, just like Bianchi's #1 has and it is much nicer. I agree that the 44 Special is a great cartridge. I handload and the thing just shoots great! My brother also had a Bulldog 44 and that was a good little shooter too!

Yes they started making these last year. It's maybe my best shooting handgun! One other nice thing, these are FLATTOPS, like their originals and the cylinder even indexes correctly for loading/unloading! Very nice gun.

Plus one flattop in stainless, plus blued Bisleys, plus blued and stainless Vaqueros. They are built on the original .357 Blackhawk (and Colt SAA) frame size, not the .44 Mag frame. Unfortunately, all the ones I mentioned are distributor exclusives, so limited time. Check out Rugers website, they are under Blackhawk, and Vaquero/distributor exclusives. They do shoot too.

I didn't really read through so this may have already been discussed but there are snap backers available that cover the back of the snap with plastic, I got some from High Desert Leather. They push into the hole and are quite secure.
