Barbour's Linen Therad #6 Cord

Recommended Posts

Howdy.

This is something like a opinion pollbiggrin.gif

I am wavering in between to buy a roll of #5 or #6 cord Barbour linen thread.

I know that for sheaths #5 cord it's strong enough(35lb tensile strength) it's not that the problem, I am talking about the "look".

Do you think for general use #6 cord is "too big/thick" (as look)?

Do you guys notice LOTS of difference between barbour #5 or #6 cord ?

I mean, can you say with just a glance that a sheath has been sewn with a 5# cord insted of #6 cord ? or the is it the difference barely noticeable?.

Every answer will be VERY appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

PS.

Maybe I will use just few yards of that thread, and since it's exepensive(and I CAN'T find just 10/20 yardsredface.gif) at least I want to be sure to buy the right size for me.

It depends on the size of the stitch and your style of stitching, but mainly on the size of the stitch.

I've used the 5 cord and 6 cord, and there's not much of a noticeable difference. I like the 6 cord a little better because it fills the stitch groove a little more evenly, The downside is when you stitch closer together, it looks a little bulky. 6 cord at 5 stitches per inch is about perfect in my opinion to fill the groove and not look bunched up. Smaller cord, more stitches per inch, larger cord, less stitches, but unless you're going wildly out of scale, either one will do the job just fine.

I like the look of the larger cord on the heavier items (holsters, sheaths). As BAD HIDE said it fills the stitching groove better. I usually sew my larger items at 6 SPI with a 7 ply waxed linen cord.
