Sutton 296A Sewing Machine

Recommended Posts

I am new to the leather working community. I recently acquired this sewing maching. It runs and feeds the leather under the needle making holes in the leather but the needle will not pick up the thread. I wonder if something is out of adjustment. I need info on how to do this. Maybe someone has an instruction manual I could buy. If you can help I would really appreciate it.

Hi, like yourself we are new to machine sewing and had a similar problem with a 29k58 patcher. After asking for help on this site we got a lot of help and advice, and better still - full detailed instruction from wizcraft:notworthy:. We printed the instructions off the computer and now we are up and running. With us it turned out to be lining up the needle correctly and the thread size. I'm sure somebody will be on soon to help you out. Good Luck

Hi Troy,

The Sutton 296 is a chain stitch machine used to put soles on shoes I think. I have seen folks very occasionally use these for knife sheaths etc, but a lockstitch machine would be better. Nevertheless, you can get a manual (probably) from http://www.shoesystemsplus.com and common parts and maybe some advice. Shoes, boots and the like are a separate part of leatherworking with their own tools and terminology, so you might not find a wealth of knowledge here. The Crispin Colloquy http://www.thehcc.org/cgi-bin/discus/discus.cgi might give you a lot more help with your machine.

Here is a topic about that manual:

Sutton was sold to stanley bostitch in the 80's and the owner went to gateway shoe machine:

Did you ask gateway shoe machine? The owner of sutton went to gateway when the company was sold.

Contact Shoe System Plus in New York or Gateway Shoe in St. Louis.  They should have manuals.
