Members Travis Fry Posted January 14, 2011 Members Report Posted January 14, 2011 This is my first real foray into leather carving other than a few oak leaves on scraps and a small flask I posted a while back. I had a bit of trouble with the burnishing and the liner, but I think I like the way it turned out.. What do y'all think? Quote
Members silentghost Posted January 14, 2011 Members Report Posted January 14, 2011 I think it looks really good, especially if this is your real first attempt at carving. Quote
Members treadhead1952 Posted January 14, 2011 Members Report Posted January 14, 2011 Hi Travis, Nice combination of the Ruger Single Six Holster and the carving pattern from the .38 Colt Official Police holsters from the "Making Holsters" book by Al Stohlman. You certainly learned from your practice sessions on those Oak Leaves, they turned out great. I also like your dye work adding to the relief of the work overall. Makes me get all itchy fingered wanting to sit down and work on something similar. Jay treadhead1952 Las Vegas, NV Quote
Members Travis Fry Posted January 14, 2011 Author Members Report Posted January 14, 2011 Good eye. I'm actually quite surprised you spotted that. It's easy to stretch and shift patterns with photoshop. Well, for my wife it is, anyway. That background took me about an hour an a half with a tiny brush, but it was worth it. Quote
Members treadhead1952 Posted January 15, 2011 Members Report Posted January 15, 2011 Hi Travis, Yeah, I work for a Photography company here in Las Vegas, catching stuff like that is second nature anymore. And using Photoshop to rework the patterns that you can dig up from many of the books and craft aids to better fit your own designs is a most excellent idea. Being a model maker, I can appreciate the patience that it took to "paint" in that back ground work. But like most things done well, a little patience goes a long way in yielding superior results. Looking forward to seeing more work from your bench. Quote

I don't care for the gloss finish, that is just MHO. I think your stitching is a little close to the edge, might have a problem with the integrity of that. ferg Quote
