bstomper Report post Posted February 1, 2011 I have a Singer 45K25 that is set up with a presser wheel. The problem being that the wheel is 'serated' and leaves marks on the leather as I'm sewing it. I've tried adjusting tensions here and there but it doesn't really change anything. I was thinking of changing the machine over from a wheel to a foot. Has any one changed from a wheel to a presser foot for this machine and is it better? Has any one ever set one of these machines up with a treadle instead of a motre and if so how did it go? Any advice or apinions would be greatly appreciated. Bstomper

I had a 45K25 with a roller foot also. But, I didn't try to change it into a flat foot; just smoothed out the tracks it left with a spoon. However, I DID mount it onto a Singer patcher iron base and used it as a treadle machine! It needed hand help on the wheel, poking a #25 needle through heavy leather, but it sewed okay for small projects. The hand wheel is massive and adds torque. I wish I'd kept that machine! Bstomper Hi bstomper I actually have an old Singer Pedal Stand that was built for the 45K25 and 7-class. The difference being that the bench has a cut out o the 45k25 Model. These Pedals run in reverse and give the best control for accurate Stitching. The Stand is from the 1890's, Big and Heavy. I change Machine heads arround on it as required,ie Cowboy 7105 (equivilent to 45K25) and 7441AE. Its a dream to use and so accurate. Regarding the Roller or Wheel foot, I change it when required with several other Feet eg: Double Toe, Right single (for Knee Pads) and a special Foot I had made for Canvas. The Roller foot is never a problem as any marks left by it can be rubed out with a Bone or Staghorn Slicker. I Hope this is a help to you. Kindest Regards. Jim Saddler. Art Report post Posted February 1, 2011 Hi, I generally use my machines with wheel presser for chrome tan leathers. When I use them on veg tan, the wheel marks get smoothed out when I close the stitch holes with a slicker or bouncer, or shoemakers hammer (that you don't ever hit anything but leather with), a little water before closing the holes can help a lot. For heavier veg or chrome, I generally use one of the compound feed machines; they too can leave marks on veg depending on the leather and the presser foot pressure. Avoid the marks as much as you can, and then learn how to handle them when you can't avoid it. If the wheel is pretty aggressive, you can polish it down a bit, and of course you need smooth feet and sometimes dogs on a compound feed machine. bstomper Report post Posted February 3, 2011 Hi, Thanks for all the replies and advice. I'll play around with smoothing out the "tracks", never even accured to me to do something like that. I think I'll keep an eye out for a tredle base. The electric moter spins to fast and I'm looking at gearing it down abit. Trouble is it's a fine line between everything or nothing with it. And everything is a little hard to control at that speed. When I get a chance I'll go and see what rpm it does. Thanks again, Cheers, Bstomper

Bob Kovar sells a gear reduction SewPro 500GR that has excellent control-ability and lots of power at slow speed.

Wizcrafts Report post Posted February 3, 2011 Also on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT Art I was aware of that eBay seller and already checked them out. I bought my SewPro 500GR, with the preferred 2 inch pulley for leather stitchers already installed, for half the shipping charge this eBay store asks. That's why I recommended Bob Kovar for a good source for these motors. They are smaller bodied than clutch motors and do required a shorted v-belt than the original you are replacing. Wizcrafts Report post Posted February 3, 2011 So how much id Bob selling it for? Art I paid $176 shipped, last Winter. I guess the price is the same, but don't know for sure. Maybe some other members who bought one more recently can confirm the price. I do know somebody that bought one from that eBay seller and it had a larger pulley that was hard to replace. They are not standard pulleys, as the shaft is narrower than most clutch and servo motors. The pulleys are hard to remove and replacements are hard to find at this time. I have asked the eBay seller if he has other pulley sizes for this motor and will report here when I find out.

bstomper Report post Posted February 9, 2011 Bob Kovar; Toledo Industrial Sewing Machines: 866-362-7397 Thanks Wizcrafts, Is he a member of leatherworker.net and if so do you know his user name? The easiest way to contact him would be via email or messaging if it's at all possible. My clutch motor is running a 3" pulley at 1450rpm and I see that most of the others generaly run a 2" so I think this will be my first step. Does anyone run a hot wax pot on their machines and how do they go? Cheers, Bstomper

You can contact him via the Forum email service and he will reply when he goes online. He and his Son, Bob Jr, own and operate Toledo Industrial Sewing Machines, Ltd. They are busy with setting up, delivering and servicing sewing machines and do not spend a lot of time online. They are the main industrial sewing machine and parts suppliers for Ohio, Indiana and Michigan.
neelsaddlery Report post Posted February 14, 2011 We may also be able to provide you with a flat leather style presser foot to fit your 45K. We use them on our Model 5 machines, and that machine is very close in design to the 45K. The cost of the leather foot is $85.00, and we also have some lower cost cast presser feet for $40.00. courtney Report post Posted April 22, 2013 Hi Wizcrafts, I know this is an old thread but did you have to do much or any modification to fit the 45k25 on the patcher stand? Thanks, Courtney

Anne Bonnys Locker Report post Posted May 3, 2013 Technically a 45k25 with a presser foot is a 45k21! I have not tried it but a rubber coated wheel off a cheap Chinese roller foot attachment might fit on the 45k roller foot.
