Members broncstompinben Posted February 2, 2011 Members Report Posted February 2, 2011 Hi I have made some rawhide doing the hot water method, but I'm interested in using the sodium sulfide method. What I'm wondering is where to find it, I can't seem to find any local companies that carry it, what kind of companies do, or are there any that some of you deal with that are really good for the money. Thanks, Ben Quote
Contributing Member Denise Posted February 3, 2011 Contributing Member Report Posted February 3, 2011 You have to go to a chemical supply company. We use Brenntag and get it in the flaked form. We get it in a 40 lb? bag. Someone else on here will probably know where to get it in smaller amounts. Quote
Members rgerbitz Posted February 3, 2011 Members Report Posted February 3, 2011 Hey Ben, I had a hell of time trying to find it around here. I found a chemical supply place in Rockford, Il. They sell it by the 55 lb bag it was around $175. Using the Yellow Pages on the internet I pulled up chemical supply places with 75 miles of home. I had to call about 20 of them before I was able to find one that carried it in that amount. I had gotten some online from a photographry supply place, can't remember where. It was something like $15 for 2 lbs. Good luck, Rob Quote

Members broncstompinben Posted February 11, 2011 Author Members Report Posted February 11, 2011 I was able to find a 10 pound bag of yellow flake and used it on my first hide today, and other than about a 8 inch circle right in the middle of the back, the hair just wiped right off. Thanks to all of you contributed info on this process it worked out so much better than anything i've ever tried (my wife doesn't care for the smell too much, but it worked great. Thanks Ben Quote
Members rgerbitz Posted February 11, 2011 Members Report Posted February 11, 2011 I came across the receipt earlier. Viking Chemical Supply in Rockford Ill. is where I got mine last. Working hides with the sulfide can be a pretty lonely deal. Nobody wants to hang out with you when you smell of rotten eggs. My dog won't even stick around. Quote
