Is This A Decent Cutter?

Recommended Posts

This looks to me like a wood plane. It may work okay for leather if it is sharp enough. The angle of the blade is rather high for skiving leather though. It really all depends on what you would want it for.

Yep, it's a wood plane. Not suitable for leather work in it's current configuration. Just another outrageous claim on Ebay.

It is for leather it's a Japanese skiver I've seen pics of it being used in Japanese leatherwork books although it looks like a wood plane it's used by pulling towards you not away. I haven't seen one used in person though so who knows how it actually goes.

I haven't used that tool... but I can vouch for the seller. My experience with them has been good quality tools and (uncommonly) quick shipping from Japan.

Hey, you know that is the same way Japanese saws work; by cutting on the pull stroke. And I tell ya, I wouldn't part with my Japanese wood saws for anything.

If I was doing a lot of skiving I might give one of these a whirl.

If you get one, let us know about it.

I remember seeing a video of someone using it.. here it is

Looks WAAAY easier to control than the lousy Tandy Super Skiver.

Looks like my post went missing from yesterday anyhow just in case it doesn't reappear thankyou for the link reddevil it was good to see it in action and I agree about the Super Skiver.

I know what you mean I don't do alot of woodwork but my sister used to and she let me use her japanese saws a couple of times they were wonderful to use. I'm kind of tempted as well but I don't do alot of skiving and it might end up sitting in a draw like the plough gauge I bought.

So if anyone decides to get one I'm with WyomingSlick let us know how it compares to the other craptastic offerings around.

Cheers,

Clair
