Members Melanie Wilfong Posted March 4, 2011 Members Report Posted March 4, 2011 My rope unravels when I burn the ends. I duct tape cut location, then cut thru the middle. Heat it over flame and roll it around/tap the end. Many times the rope unravels. Sometimes I get a nice tight end. I've heard of hot cutting with a soldering tool that has an exacto blade welded on the end, but I don't really want to build a project just to get rope cut . What am I doing wrong? I don't have this trouble with poly rope. Thanks Quote
Tree Reaper Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 You can use heat shrink tubing or lashing to finish the end. Quote
Contributing Member TwinOaks Posted March 5, 2011 Contributing Member Report Posted March 5, 2011 Twist the rope tightly before applying the tape, then, as said, cut through the tape and rope together. Melt end, then apply super glue to the last half inch (above the melted end). Or....whip the end (I use dental floss). Quote
Members Melanie Wilfong Posted March 5, 2011 Author Members Report Posted March 5, 2011 (edited) Thank you!! I'll try the dental floss. Just found this link. Maybe it will help somebody else. http://www.scouting....t4-Whipping.pdf http://www.scouting.org.za/resources/pioneering/Whipping.pdf Edited March 5, 2011 by Melanie Wilfong Quote

Members roo4u Posted March 5, 2011 Members Report Posted March 5, 2011 when i cut used lariat for projects i just tape it cut through the tape and then use either a torch or a woodburning tool to melt the end....but you have to get it hot and then kinda roll it to keep the ends together while cooling Quote
Tree Reaper Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 If it's three strand you can crown splice it. Quote
Members Aggiebraider Posted March 5, 2011 Members Report Posted March 5, 2011 you can crown it no matter how many strands there are, but if you are trying to get it small, you will have to heat and roll it while its hot. You are basically melting the strands together Quote
