Dye Coming Off Jacket

Recommended Posts

hello, a lady brought in a leather jacket, the tag says jillian valentina. it is a patchwork jacket. in quite a few areas it looks like the black dye is wearing off, exposing greens browns and some greyish colours. is there a way i can repair this? can i use a black dye to go over it? does it need to be treated first with something? any help would be greatly appreciated! thank you for your time.

Here is what I would do if I was faced with this request?

1. Decide on a plan of attack, write it down, and discuss it with the owner;

2. If they agree, at the bottom of the plan have them sign a statement that releases you from any damage that might be caused by following the plan;

3. Then follow the plan and only the plan when trying to fix it.

Now for the Plan:

1. Find a part of the jacket that will not be seen (under the arm pit);

2. Select a small piece of leather in that location and try to dye it black by;

a. Treat it with Deglazer to get any oils off the surface;

b. With a very thin solution of black dye (i would use an oil base and a 25% dye to 75% thinner mix );

c. Very carefully treat just that small area and watch to see what happens.

d. If the dye takes, then go up in mixture strength until you have recolored that one spot;

e. When finally dry, buff with a clean white cloth to remove any residual;

f. Treat with a wax or some other finish;

g. Then follow this process for the damaged areas.

If the process damages the piece under the arm pit, say you are sorry and return the jacket.
