Members jlaudio29 Posted May 14, 2011 Members Report Posted May 14, 2011 The snaps i currently have are not deep enough to go through two 7/8 pieces of leather plus the loop and then still crimp to the back side of the snap. What should i use? i checked tandy didnt see anything deeper. unless i missed something. any help is appreciated. Tried searching but couldnt come up with anything. Thanks Quote
MADMAX22 Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 Go to a hardware store and get some tnuts and some counter sunk machine screws. 6/32" is the correct size for the counter sunk screw to fit in the snap bottom and retain it properly. http://www.lowes.com/pd_58099-37672-490641_4294856646+4294838086_4294937087_?productId=3035965&Ns=p_product_prd_lis_ord_nbr|0||p_product_quantity_sold|1&pl=1¤tURL=%2Fpl_Tee_4294856646%2B4294838086_4294937087_%3FNs%3Dp_product_prd_lis_ord_nbr|0||p_product_quantity_sold|1%26page%3D2&facetInfo=Tee Quote
Lobo Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 I use panhead machine screws of #6-32 size in lengths of 1/4", 5/16", and 3/8" depending on the thickness of the pieces I am securing. A T-nut is set into the leather from behind, then the male stud of the snap is secured to the T-nut with the machine screw passing through the center hole (where the rivet base would normally go). T-nuts with 1/4" shaft length work well. 1/4" is very close to the thickness of two layers of 7-8 oz. leather. Machine screws can be selected for the length necessary, keeping in mind that one thickness of 7-8 oz. leather is approximately 1/8". I keep screws on hand in the lengths listed above, which seem to meet all of my needs. Buying in small quantities at a hardware store will help you figure out what sizes and lengths you need for your designs. Then you can purchase by the hundreds or thousands and get much better prices. Bolt Depot (www.boltdepot.com) has been a good source with a broad selection and reasonable prices. You'll find T-nuts under the "nuts" tab, and machine screws under that tab. Quote
Members Shooter McGavin Posted May 14, 2011 Members Report Posted May 14, 2011 I use the #6 T-Nuts as well, but I place them between the front and back pieces of leather so the holster has no exposed hardware. Quote

Members JoelR Posted May 17, 2011 Members Report Posted May 17, 2011 For IWB I only use stainless t-nuts and either brass or stainless screws. Unlike the others I use #8 screws and reform the heads. I also trim down the spikes and place the nut between the layers of leather. I think it gives a more finished appearance. Jmho. Quote
