Vinegaroon For A Belt?

Recommended Posts

I am going to make a black belt. I have some USMC black dye and some vinegaroon I made up. I made a nice black holster with the vinegaroon but can't put any pictures up since my wife is out of town with the camera until sometime tonight.

My question is this: would it be ok to use vinegaroon on the belt or just dye the face with the black dye, leaving the back natural?

You may be able to do it, but I'd bet it'd be difficult.. My opinion is limited as I'm fairly new, but I tried to do that to a wallet and I got spotting of the 'Roon through the back.

I have used vinegaroon on several belts. Its great because no matter if you sweat or get it wet or anything you dont have to worry about the dye running on your pants. I have about a half gallon coffee tub that I have my vinegaroon in. I loosly roll the belt up and drop it in for a minute or so. I give it a little shake to make sure everything gets the black then go about the rest of the process. Turns out great. I have also lined the inside of them with natural vegtan for a double layer belt.

I agree with MADMAX, I use vinegar black when ever the thing I'm working on will be black. The positive aspects outweigh any supposed negatives IMHO. I may have a jug of black dye somewhere, but since making my first 'roon', I haven't used it, and don't quite know where to look for it if I wanted it. Mike

I am mixing up my first batch now. Do you all neutralize it after taking out of the roon mix? If so how. I believe backing soda will work but how do you apply it? I was think of a spray bottle?

What works?

If you'll check the 'dyes, adhesives.....' forum, you'll find several discussions and tutorials on vinegaroon, including at least one really long one where we've delved into the chemistry behind it. As for a using on a belt? Oh, most certainly! I don't have a big tub to dunk it in, so I use a gallon ziploc. Roll belt, drop in bag, pour in 'enough' 'roon to coat everything and start shaking it around.

I'm not so sure about 'roon in a spray bottle- the overspray is the issue. Vinegaroon is ferric acetate and WILL stain things it gets on....probably permanently. I use a cheap 1 inch brush to apply it, and don't worry about 'over applying' it. It just soaks in looks that much better. If you have some spotting issues with it, just soak through from the other side. Some folks use a baking soda bath to neutralize it, I just use a cold water rinse.

The longer you wear the 'roon, the better it looks.

I agreee with the vinagaroon for a belt. It won't stain anything due to sweat, etc. I use baking soda in a tub with water and soak for a minute or less and then rinse with water bath to clean up afterward. The only downside I have found to using the 'roon is you have to realy oil the leather afterward, due to all the chemical reactions, I would guess.

As far as the oiling goes, I've been using a bottle of old Olive oil. Works great and it's inexpensive.

I just bought some steel wool from harbor freight and put it in a gallon jug of water for 2 weeks. Then I put it in vinegar for a week. I cheated and tried it after 4-5 days and it came out great. Email me at chazdillon@aol.com for pics. Can't figure out how to post pics from this iPhone. Smelly but rinse it well and leave outside if possible. I just applied it with a dauber also.
