aaron61032 Report post Posted June 21, 2011 Those are some nice collars. I was trying to make a pink collar but the hi lite I was using ( Eco Dusty Rose Pink Hi-Lite) wasn't showing the stamps. What brand did you use for pink hi lite?

What brand did you use for pink hi lite? That is what I used, put it on heavy with a paper towel, let it puddle in the the stamped area and wipe it down with a damp towel on the remainder to remove excess, the more you wipe the more you will remove. Seal with Resolene cut 50/50 with water, if you brush the Resolene on it will remove more hi-lite so be careful. Try it on a scrap piece first. I also clean my leather with oxalic acid (wood bleach) before applying finish, seems to help. Mark Edited June 21, 2011 by bentley

aaron61032 Report post Posted June 22, 2011 Thanks for the help definitely trying this out. Did you do just one coat or more?
Mijo Report post Posted June 22, 2011 bently, your collars and leashes look great. Wouldn't it be easier to purchase the leather already dyed pink rather than having to do it yourself? I purchased a hide of some pink bridldle leather (8 - 9 oz) from weaver several months ago that looks very close in color to the pink leather you use. aaron61032 Report post Posted June 22, 2011 I got another noob question for you guys. If I went with pre dyed leather what effect does tooling have? Would you have the same hilight on stampings like yours has if it was bought dyed?
bentley Report post Posted June 22, 2011 Thanks for the help definitely trying this out. Did you do just one coat or more? One coat, another coat will mess with the first coat, taking some off, unless you wipe it clean with a damp cloth and start over. The ecoflo stuff is water based and most will wipe off if you use a wet cloth. BTW, thanks for the compliments and you are welcome. Mark

I don't know about tooling dyed leather, don't use it. Not sure how you will hi-lite with the same color if it is already dyed. No experiance working with it and not really interested in byeing a large piece of dyed leather for a 4" x 24" piece I need for a collar. I also like the way you can still see the original leather color through the dye, just a pink hue. Not saying what you like is wrong, just not what I am looking for. Mark When I stamped a pink harness I made for one of my dogs with my dog's name and phone number, the letters and numbers actually came out slightly darker pink than the actual leather. It might be due to the fact that I did some stamping on some black latigo leather the day before though. With the pre dyed pink hide I purchased you definately can't see the original leather color.
