Okay this should get loads of different opinions. What makes the best stamping stone & why?

The reason I ask is I have access to a bunch of granite at a super good price, now if it stands up great if not it would be a waste of my time.

You won´t be sorry for a 4" thick piece of granite !

The thicker the stone the better. Also, the color makes a differance. Red granite is about the hardest, black is next. Generally, the darker the stone the harder it is.

I'm using a granite surface plate and it works great. It's a 12"x18" two ledge surface plate so the total thickness is around 6 inches for most of the work surface. I like it quite a bit.

I absolutely support the granite options.

At the risk of sounding macabre, my first piece was a botched gravestone which I was given for free by the undertaker. The supporting structure/table/bench (and the floor underneath it) must be REALLY sturdy; you do not want this stuff dropping on your foot mid-way through a stamping session. Also watch your back when you try to shift the granite!

Good luck.

All the best,

Jerry
