Johanna Report post Posted June 4, 2008 I never know what will fall out of pants in the laundry. I found this little gizmo and asked about it. It was cut with the lasers- everything from the writing to the shape, and it measures steel. I know the edges of a hide are erratic, but a little keychain version of this would be handy for leather, wouldn't it? Or maybe someone is already making them? I figured I'd ask you guys, and if someone has one, I'd like to see what it looks like. Johanna
bruce johnson Report post Posted June 4, 2008 Johanna, I have seen those on the wall in shops where guys do shoe and boot repair. I don't know if they were a give-away deal or they bought them. Probably would be good for checking sole leather weight, ot something hard like that. I have one of the little caliper-dial models that works pretty well. I think I got it from TLF. I have it hanging within an easy reach of the splitters and use it quite a bit.
UKRay Report post Posted June 3, 2009 Did this one go any further? I also found one of these in a box of second hand tools and thought it was very useful. Pkay Report post Posted April 3, 2015 I watched a tannery video on utube and they had a gauge with a dial gauge attached which allowed them to measure about a foot into the hide which would work well. I always find that the edges are hard and thicker than the leather I wish to use from the hide, not representative.
TinkerTailor Report post Posted April 3, 2015 Here is the tool from the video:http://www.buckleguy.com/Harriss-leather-gauges/Btw, Weaver also sells these but don't have all of them.
Chief31794 Report post Posted April 4, 2015 BlackRiverLaser.com makes the same tool in acrylic, but it measures in oz (64th of an inch) called a handy guage. I have several of them and use them all the time. Great tool. Chief
TinkerTailor Report post Posted April 4, 2015 That first tool is based on the sheetmetal thickness gauges that metalworkers have used for ages.http://www.starrett.com/metrology/product-detail/1-Precision-Measuring-Tools/11-Precision-Hand-Tools/1115-Fixed-Gage-Standards/111506-Thickness-Gages/
biglew Report post Posted April 4, 2015 i have a couple of the blackriver laser guides... easy to use and a inexpensive choice. At work we have many dial indicator gauges that measure leather more accurately... but i doubt most people need to be that picky.... as in the products we make that can't vary by more than 2/10ths of a MM
Nuttish Report post Posted April 15, 2015 (edited) Starrett 1010 pocket thickness gage. <$50 on eBay. The Mitutoyo 7803 is nearly identical and priced similarly. These are machinists' tools that measure in thousandths, so use the table from Stohlman's Insider's Guide to Leathercrafting.
