Randy Cornelius Report post Posted August 12, 2011 Weaver Leather has a new product called "Leather Firmer" it is discribed as being used to firm up leather for use in cases, holsters, ect. and also be used on belly leather to make is usable. Has anyone used this product and if so could you give me some feedback as to how well it done. I was told on the phone that you have to dip the leather in the liquid and let dry. Denster Report post Posted August 14, 2011 I posted about it in the holster section. All it contains is alcohol. The MSDS sheet lists it as not poisonous so it's not denatured alcohol although if you don't intend to drink it denatured will do the same thing just cheaper. I ordered a gallon on a whim after the lady at Weaver's told me she didn't know how it worked but that it didn't contain alcohol because there was no MSDS sheet with it. Of course when it arrived there was the MSDS showing the alcohol content. For what it is worth it will not make belly leather suitable for holsters. All the alcohol does is liquify collagens glueing thwe leather fibers in place essentially the same thing heating damp molded leather to 120 degrees or so does. Thanks OK it is an ether of ethelyne Glycol which is antifreeze. Very simialr to alcohol. The effect is the same it acts as a solvent for the collagens in leather the same way alcohol or water conbined with heat does. Essentially glueing the fibers into place. My original post on the subject explained that.It will not make belly leather suitable for holsters. If you need that effect for cases or something you can get the same much cheaper just using alchohol or water and heat.
