Oil Dye

Recommended Posts

Just a quick question about dyes. What it the purpose or advantage/disadvantage with the use of oil dyes? Are there applications where oil based are better than spirit based dyes?

I know this is a basic question but I'm new at this and I'm still trying to get my head wrapped around the various dyes, conditioners, finishes and such.

Well since no one else has answered I would think the oil dye would spread more evenly. I'm considering changing to oil dyes instead of the regular. I have had a little trouble with blotchiness with the regular dyes. My leather even seems a little bit dry after dying. If it's anything like wood dye it should be easier to apply. Maybe someone else can chime in here to help us out.

Well I've just started using the oil dyes and it seems to me that it penetrates better and even does seem to condition the leather a little bit. I have a feeling that I will be purchasing more of the oil dyes as my supplies of the spirit based dyes run out.

i tried the feibings black oil dye for the first time a few weeks ago. i love this stuff! it penetrated very well and seemed to cover on the first coat. but more to my liking was the fact that it didn't come off on your hands when it dried. no bleeding at all. i really wouldn't go back to sprit dye (for black, anyway.)

That was my experience with the black oil dye as well. I always rub a cloth over the leather before I put on a finish and the black oil dye had hardly any rub off at all as compared to the USMC Black which is spirit based.

That stuff always takes several coats and a lot of it rubs off after it dries.
