toasty1435 Report post Posted August 29, 2011 Has anyone else had problems with their dye mixture (1part dye to 3 parts alcohol) eating away their glue? I have some straps I'm making and they come undone when I apply the dye. I use Aleenes tacky glue but I'm wondering if I switch to Weldwood would that make a difference? Thanks. King's X Report post Posted August 29, 2011 (edited) This is interesting. I have never heard of the glue that you are using. I use Master's contact cement and have never had this issue. I also have a gallon of the Weldwood and cannot recall this occurring as well. I would like to ask why you are mixing your dye? Maybe the alcohol content is causing this disruption of the gluing properties. Good luck! Edited August 29, 2011 by King's X
toasty1435 Report post Posted August 29, 2011 The glue I'm using is this kind.. http://shop.hobbylobby.com/assets/item/zoom/154195.jpg And as for the mixing ratio that's just what I've read on a couple of threads. It definitely helps with consistent coloring.
Spinner Report post Posted August 29, 2011 Yep, I've seen that happen on 'craft glues' before. They are highly water soluable and meant for for scrapbooking, kid's wood projects, etc. They will break apart easily with anything stronger than water and break down relatively quickly when exposed to heat, moisture, etc. A stronger glue like weldwood, Gorilla clear, Barge or even Tandy's leatherweld would be far better. A good rule of thumb is if it says "not for use on washable wearables" that means it won't stand up against being around solvents or even regular use. Spinner Report post Posted August 29, 2011 No problem, my mom does quite a bit of scrapbooking and other crafty stuff so I've seen it's limitations first hand.
