Another New Guy Wanting To Start

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. As the title suggests, I'm new and looking to get into the hobby. The interest started when I got into bowyering a few months ago and wanted a bracer to go along with the bows that I build. While I've yet to get there yet, I've managed to pick up some basic tools and dabble a little as well as check out a few books from the library on the subject.

Instead of the bracer, I've decided that the first project I really want to tackle is binding a Bible for my girlfriend. She's been looking for a new one for a while now, and just can't seem to find one she likes. I feel that it would be a nice surprise as well as help bring us even closer in our faith.

Unfortunately, the books I've checked out contain very little information on binding, so I have a couple of questions:

Are there any books in addition other than those by Al Stohlman I see suggest that I should look into, especially on this topic?

Is it possible to order unbound Bibles, or will I need to find an appropriate copy to simply rebind?

I'm sure I will have plenty of questions in the future, but for now, I thank you for your time!

Hi RainMedic. Have you considered a Bible cover, rather than binding a Bible? You might find it an easier project to break into leatherwork with, and that way your girlfriend can have a cover for her favorite Bible that she currently has. Run "Bible cover" through the search bar at the top of the forum, and I think you'll see some things that will knock your socks off.

I have to agree, I would recomend starting with a cover rather than bindind it. If you fit it tight it will seem almost like the actual cover. Here is the one I have on my Bible:

Very nice, Aaron!

Thank you both for your input. Truth is, I was actually considering this myself since I couldn't find too many resources on bookbinding at the moment. Now I'll be able to refocus my search.

Thanks again!

If you decide to get into actual book binding, I have an excellent book at home. I can get the ISBN number for you. I picked my copy up at Books A Million recently.

Thank you both for the book suggestion. Yes, Radar67, I would love the ISBN. My local Books-A-Million never seems to have anything on leather, nor can I ever find an associate to help me.

K-Man, I'll definitely look into that one.

Yes, Radar67, I would love the ISBN.

The Craft of Bookbinding

  • ISBN-10: 0486278522
  • ISBN-13: 978-0486278520

It even has plans to build most of the tools you will use. I was also mistaken, I ordered the book from Amazon.
