Members karl Posted June 10, 2008 Members Report Posted June 10, 2008 Hi fellas, Here is a blue jay feather I carved, Actually my first attempt, I didn't have a blue jay feather to copy from, but its blue. LOL Karl Quote
yaklady Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 Sorry, I'm not a "fella", but I'm gonna respond anyway! You've got the blue jay color down pretty well, but you missed one thing, the shaft (some people call it the quill). On a blue jay, it's white at the end where it comes out of the bird for about a 1/4 of the way, and it's black from there to the tip. Have you made many feathers? ClayB puts them on buffalo. Maybe I should put them on yaks. Kathy Quote

LOL. Karl There's no way I would have gotten the color that close by "winging it"! I hate to think what mine would have looked like. Edited June 10, 2008 by yaklady Quote
Colman Posted June 11, 2008 Report Posted June 11, 2008 Karl, For the first attempt that is very good. Found this feather in the back yard this evening (thanks to the Blue Jay that stays back there) and thought you may want a "real" example. Not the most colorful, but a good example. Johnny Quote
Contributing Member ClayB Posted June 11, 2008 Contributing Member Report Posted June 11, 2008 Hi Karl, You did pretty good for your first feather. They can be a lot of fun to make once you get going on them. For ideas on coloring them, you can check out Paul Burnett's website Paintingcow.com and go to the gift shop. He does all kinds of different feathers and his coloring is about as good as it gets. I think he also sells packets with practice feathers and instructions on how to color them, and different leaves too. Quote
