yaklady Report post Posted June 10, 2008 Sorry, I'm not a "fella", but I'm gonna respond anyway! You've got the blue jay color down pretty well, but you missed one thing, the shaft (some people call it the quill). On a blue jay, it's white at the end where it comes out of the bird for about a 1/4 of the way, and it's black from there to the tip. Have you made many feathers? ClayB puts them on buffalo. Maybe I should put them on yaks. Kathy

yaklady Report post Posted June 10, 2008 (edited) Kathy, actually this is my first attempt at making feathers and I didn't have a photo of a blue jay feather to go by and (excuse the pun) just winged it. LOL. Karl There's no way I would have gotten the color that close by "winging it"! I hate to think what mine would have looked like. Colman Report post Posted June 11, 2008 Karl, For the first attempt that is very good. Found this feather in the back yard this evening (thanks to the Blue Jay that stays back there) and thought you may want a "real" example. Not the most colorful, but a good example. ClayB Report post Posted June 11, 2008 Hi Karl, You did pretty good for your first feather. They can be a lot of fun to make once you get going on them. For ideas on coloring them, you can check out Paul Burnett's website Paintingcow.com and go to the gift shop. He does all kinds of different feathers and his coloring is about as good as it gets. I think he also sells packets with practice feathers and instructions on how to color them, and different leaves too.
